ComparisonGender Representation in GTA 5 and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
In GTA 5, gender is represented in a large variety of ways. This is because the narrative of the game features three main characters who all have different personalities and preferences. For example, Michael, the character on the left is the mind and the brains behind bank heists as he is a retired bank robber. And Franklin, the middle character is a young thief who is trying to work has way up the crime ladder. And finally, Trevor is a maniac who is known to be the maniac of the group. He is the one who tries to mess up the ideas which Michael and Franklin have came up with. In terms of women, the GTA narrative has very little association with women in the main campaign. There are strip clubs in the game, where women are seen to be objectified at the maximum level. And when you free roam in the game, you will see women wearing significantly less clothes than normal. This may be because the main player for GTA will be a male. Therefore the male would typically like to see these women. In Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, you see a feminine protagonist who takes on the role of a survival game which doesn't fit the typical narrative of women in games. You see Lara fight her way out dangerous situations and survive against the highest odds. In the image on the right, you see Lara firing a bow and arrow, which is lit on fire. This image alone illustrates how dangerous and powerful her character is. |
